Time to Unplug

Ok, seriously, now I really am going to unplug for a while...

It's time for some tidying and re-organization, because the project pile is getting unmanageable. has been unmanageable for some time!

And even though the project pile is getting unmanageable, I'm getting twitchy and ready for something new. (Do you see Olive's tail in the photo?)

I already had one close call with a potential new project last week! So it's time to take charge.

About a month ago I bought this book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. I agree with everything she says -- even the weird stuff.

To me, it's not so much a book about tidying, it's a book about how to make decisions. The practice is tidying.

Today I started the process with my clothes (the first step on the list). My wardrobe was already in good shape, I thought, but I still reduced it by more than half. There were some surprises too, for what made the cut and what didn't.

The next step is my books, which is quite a sticky source of attachment for me. But, I'm committed, and interested to see what will happen!

So, I'm going to clear out of blogland for a while.

And with luck, I'll be clearing out the house a little too. Maybe a lot!

Don't wait up. :D

(And no, there is no mention of a quilt fabric stash in Kondo's book. But, I want to do it too. Maybe last! Honestly, I think the books will be the hardest.)

In the meantime, happy stitching!

  1. I read her book and liked many of the things she wrote. Certainly we squirrel away too much stuff we don't use.

  2. have a good sort out, I sold over 100 books a couple of years ago must own up to regreting letting some of them go. As for clothes have things going back to the 80s that I still wear some are not really fit foe purpose anymore so maybe I should have a clear out too best of luck

  3. I think we could all afford to do this! I don't think I could make much of a dent in my books though...

  4. My books have been de-stashed (and, I must admit--re-stashed again) and I have my wardrobe to do...we are taking one part of our house at a time (like the spare room closet!!, cellar, attic etc.); it's a long project...good luck hugs, Julierose

  5. Oh, my. Dare I read her book? Just sayin' because my clothes closet, fabric stash, and sewing room are in dire need of cleaning out. I have 450+ quilting books. I hyperventilate just thinking about the work involved.

  6. I have tried to let go of some of my quilting books. Maybe it is time to read the book! Thanks for the inspiration and have fun on your hiatus.

  7. Totally understand - we are continually making decisions in order to reduce the "THINGS" count in our house and make sure that we keep only what we really care about/need/use. Best wishes and we'll see you when you return.

  8. Good luck! I'm in the process of decluttering, but I must admit I didn't get far with my fabric sorting! Maybe I should read the book too!

  9. I'm wishing you the best! I've started that path. . .but, have stalled. . .I look forward to hearing about your progress! New projects are okay to start ANYTIME. . .just my two cents as you know that I have plenty of WIPs myself! :)

    1. Thanks, Terry! I know it will be a lot more fun to start new projects once I have some breathing room around here. Since I haven't been able to get rid of any of my UFOs, something else will have to give! It's amazing how all the useless crap builds up...

  10. Go for it Monica, while the motivation is there. I bought a similar (Japanese) book but gave it to my brother before I read it. I had, however, a powerful need for a sea change. I think I shed about 60% of my possessions when I sold my house and moved to the apartment - including about 6000 books. No regrets. Recently I've had another minor clear out - not yet finished. I find it a bit like I imagine surfing to be - catching the wave of determination and riding it for all it's worth. On some days the waves are smaller - but when a big one comes it's worth going for it. A lot of the time it's good to collect shells on the beach. Happy surfing!

    1. Thanks, Jillian! I thought I still have a lot of books, but you had more! I find it very encouraging that you were able to shed so many. I am looking forward to feeling a lot lighter and more mobile once I'm done!

  13. You are being so brave!! I bought this book late last year - it's still on the reading stack although I have had a quick peek. Don't know I'm brave enough to tackle my books, nor my fabrics!! Olive is a lovely kitty - she'll no doubt be keeping you company whilst you de-clutter! Hope you're back soon.

I'm told Blogger has been bouncing some comments, so if it happens to you I'm sorry! But the settings look right so I can't explain it. In any case, thanks for reading!
