New Project - Hourglasses

Do you all remember this project from the cover of Sew Scrappy, volume two?  I reviewed it back in January:

Well, it's the second project I've started this week. I thought all along that it would be a great way to use up a lot of the more dubious fabrics I've accumulated over the years. I'm hoping that once they are cut small enough they will all blend into a harmonious whole. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Here you can see the infamous banana fabric that has plagued me for several years:

Is that not the worst thing you have ever seen?  It came in a scrap bag from Keepsake Quilting.  I stopped buying scrap bags and fat quarter packs once I realized that they were full of fabrics that no one else was willing to buy.  When I started weeding out my stash, I found tons of them, so I think I will enlarge this quilt to a queen size.  That will be 7 ft by 8 ft, or 896 3" hourglasses.  63 down,

833 to go!

  1. It's probably going to turn out just fine. The picture on the front of the books looks like it would be a lot of fun to make.

  2. major project you have started, my fabric stash is growing but when I want something it is not in the stash so the stash grows again!
I am going to pop over to amazon to look up the book Sew Scrappy looks as if I might find I need it

    1. Sew Scrappy was actually a magazine, not a book, so I doubt you'll find it on Amazon. I would try eBay.

  3. That banana fabric that you said no one bought - I did! It was the backing for a child's quilt that featured Sock Monkey fabric. The banana fabric came in more than one colorway, too - I know, hard to believe, isn't it? If you want more I probably have some in my stash. ;-)

    1. LOL! Context is everything, I think. Combined with other monkey-themed fabrics, it was probably cute. I was hoping to buy a bag full of neutral brown blenders, so the bananas were quite a shock!

I'm sure you are wondering now what do to with the leftovers!

  5. Monica, I bought a wooden loom for making woven rag rugs at Paducah in April. That is how I plan to get rid of a huge amount of leftover fabrics. That and Bonnie Hunter's patterns. She is the "Scrap Queen' and if you are not familiar with her, you can catch up with her antics at www.quiltville.blogspot.com. She has over 40 free patterns for using up scraps.

    1. A loom for rag rugs is a great idea. Just beware of buying more fabrics to finish the rugs! I know I probably would.

I'm told Blogger has been bouncing some comments, so if it happens to you I'm sorry! But the settings look right so I can't explain it. In any case, thanks for reading!
