Happy 150, Canada!

Happy Canada Day to all my Canadian readers, and anyone else who feels like celebrating too! No quilts today, just a slice of summer vacation in the Canadian Shield. The photo above is an early morning shot of Lake of Two Rivers in Algonquin Park. You may hear a White-throated Sparrow...

...but you don't usually see them, they are high in the trees. And there is nothing eerier than hearing the loon echoing over the water:

There has been a lot of discussion in the media this week about what makes a typical Canadian experience, and the truth is that there isn't one thing that fits everyone across the board. Everyone has their own customs, and most people are ok with that.

For one version of the Canadian experience, you may, if you like, imagine relaxing in a Muskoka chair by the lake (they are extremely comfortable), breathing the crisp air, and drinking a nice hot cup of coffee. (We learned this week that Canadians are the third highest per capita consumers of coffee in the world, after The Netherlands and Finland, and before Norway and Sweden.)

I will almost certainly be sewing on Canada Day, and I'll be very glad that I am free to do it, too. And despite my earlier post, I don't think I'll take a blog break any time soon. I have lots of motivation these days. Maybe I'll slow down in August. But for now, enjoy your weekend!

I am already sitting in the chair with my coffee,... well I'm Dutch,...

Thank you, I loved the sound of the bird!

  2. Happy Birthday, Canada! 150 years is a long time and worth a big celebration although, I would enjoy sitting in the Muskoka chair sipping a cup of coffee enjoying the lake view! I'm glad to read that you aren't on "break" yet and might not be! I too enjoyed the sounds of the loon and sparrow.

    1. Thanks, Terry! There are many ways to celebrate. Not everyone would choose a day of sewing either!

  3. Happy birthday, Canada! I hope you're enjoying some stitching and coffee this weekend! Thanks for the bird songs! The loons are very eerie....it would be awesome to hear them in Real Life. I can just imagine sitting by the lake in the evening, listening to them.

  4. Happy birthday, Canada. You'll have to take point as the Leader of the Free World. Thanks for sharing the relaxing links and sounds. So interesting and educational.
I'm sewing a bit today, too.

    1. Thanks, Jillian! You know I would rather look forward than back. But, I do think it's become clear that it's time for reconciliation with our aboriginal peoples, and I'm hoping there is the will to really do it now. It's time to get everyone working in the same direction.

  6. Happy Birthday, Canada! A chair, a lake, a coffee sounds great to me. I had noticed your break wasn't happening, but I guess that's okay if you're around because you want to be and not because you feel you ought to be.

  7. Happy Birthday to our good neighbors to the north. A special birthday is always time of reflection.

  8. Those Muskoka chairs are called Adirondack chairs south of the border. And, yes, they are comfortable. I love lakes. Hope you get some relaxation in between all the sewing. I am learning to knit socks with the help of a knitting friend, YouTube, and written material.

  9. Those chairs are super comfortable, but I have a hard time getting out of them with my old knees--lol! I love the sound of the loons at night, although they can be pretty loud at times. We have a couple nesting just a few feet from our shore. It's been fun watching baby learn to dive!

I'm told Blogger has been bouncing some comments, so if it happens to you I'm sorry! But the settings look right so I can't explain it. In any case, thanks for reading!
