Daydream Baskets Flimsy

Last time you saw this project, I was thinking about using the fabric crumbs left over from the improv pieced baskets to make the setting triangles. I spent a couple days sewing, and a couple more days thinking, and then I threw all the bits out. It was just a distraction, and didn't help the design in any way.

There are two main stories in this quilt -- the improv piecing, and the colour scheme. For a small wall quilt, that's enough. So, I just sewed the blocks together and cut simple setting triangles from the same fabrics already in the blocks.

Daydream Baskets flimsy, about 37" (94 cm) square
Two of my reject blocks were cut up to supplement the crumbs, and went in the bin with the rest. But, one had survived, and I used it as a setting triangle on the lower right there. A bit of Japanese influence to go with all the Asian fabrics!

I will say that as a rule, it would be better to use sashing or alternate blocks of solid fabric with these blocks, because there are a lot of heavy points coming together in the seams. There is quite a bit of "problem solving" happening in the seam allowances on the back!  Anyway, my plan is to free motion quilt it here at home, so hopefully I can work around the lumps.

This quilt was inspired by the #basketswu sew along started by Barb, and my improv inspirations are always Ann and Kaja. Check their blogs to see what else is happening with the Ad Hoc Improv Quilters as they wrap up 2017!

I will probably be back again in a day or two with some Ringo Lake progress. I'm making changes!

  5. This is so lovely, Monica. I like the half basket on the edge. You are a master of color placement. I love watching all your quilts develop.
It's interesting how differently small quilts are than large ones. As your quilt highlights, they have different requirements. They need fewer fabrics and placement changes. I'm making similar discoveries with the Chinese Coins.

  6. Gorgeous! I love these baskets, Monica. They are jubilant! How large are they. I can't tell from the photo. I keep thinking of using reds and yellows together but haven't yet. One of these days....

  7. I do like your baskets! And I think the idea of FMQ will add texture without detracting from the colors and style. Well done!!

  9. So fun! I love the half basket block especially. I see you are in a deep freeze right now. A friend is visiting her son and his family in Ottawa and sent me a photo of her cell phone showing -25 degree temps. It is cold here too, but at least it's above zero! Good that we enjoy an indoor hobby.

  10. You're right, sometimes we try to tell too many stories in one quilt. I like what you settled on, especially the fun surprise of the block used as the setting triangle. The colors are super exciting.

  11. I like the story that your wall hanging is telling now! Those basket points sure pop! Your background fabrics do work well and I was liking the crumbs; but, now I like this better!!!

  12. I am so in love with this little quilt! The colors, sigh..., the baskets, sigh..., the half basket? Amazing!! It's all just sweet as could be but with so much zest. I'm going to make notes about these colors too. Just might have to try something with this palette!

  13. This is lovely! I like the colours a lot and the way that you have used lots of reds in similar tones but managed to keep everything nicely balanced and avoided them mushing together - very clever. The addition of the half basket also pleases my eye a lot.

  14. I still like the colours from the Windsor Castle inspiration. The red background is very effective. I also like your use of discarded blocks to create something fun and new.

I'm told Blogger has been bouncing some comments, so if it happens to you I'm sorry! But the settings look right so I can't explain it. In any case, thanks for reading!
