Homegrown Kitchen Set, Part 2
Here, finally, are the three completed tops for the Homegrown placemats that I started before Christmas! We only ever use three, so that's a complete set for us.
I finished the last seam on them today with just 7 inches of thread left in the bobbin! Don't you love it when that happens? "Clean living," is what I always call it. :D
To refresh your memory, here are the two co-ordinating potholders as well:
The next step will be to quilt them, with a combination of straight and free-motion quilting. I'm hoping to buckle down to that soon. It's several years now since I last did any FMQ, and I was never more than a beginner, which is why I want to practice on these placemats before I do Highlands Houses. It's always the first step that's the hardest!

best of luck with the quilting I am sure they will look great when finished, I have bought some heat resistant wadding and plan to make some some time
ReplyDeleteThanks, Margaret! We have a few purchased potholders with that heat resistant wadding, and we don't like them because they are too stiff. I am going to try to use just a couple of layers of regular cotton batting, and see how that works. I'll let you know!
DeleteNice and cheerful placemats! Good luck on the FMQ, I'm not very good either.
ReplyDeleteThey look wonderful!! How handy that 3 is a set. You are so right about the first step being the hardest, at least placemats is not as daunting as a quilt. Fun music is the trick to quilting, you can quilt to the beat.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachael! Music is an interesting idea, actually. Normally if the music is too good I get distracted and start making mistakes. But for FMQ, maybe less thinking and more intuition will be a help. I will let you know how I do!
DeleteCant wait to see them quilted.
ReplyDeleteWhat cheerful colours you chose for the placemats and pot holders. I can imagine all of the happy meals you will eat from them.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the FMQ. I find listening to adagios are the perfect tempo for my quilting; fluid, without being too slow or too fast. The tempo of the music I listen to really does influence my quilting! (Mick Jagger does not a good quilting partner make; at least not for me!) I'm interested to hear what you and your machine dance to.
Thanks very much! It is interesting to hear all the different thoughts on music. I expect, though, that the music will be off when I first start. Even in a dance studio, they don't turn on the music until you know the steps!
DeleteLove the fabric and colours. Good luck with the quilting. So sensible to practice on a potholder!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking placemats and potholders. Will look great when quilted. They are so nice and colourful!
ReplyDeleteHow true. Yes, quite often the first step is the hardest. Connecting Threads fabrics? Looks familiar. The colours are lovely but I would make 4 placemats. That way if one gets dirty, I can still put 3 out.
